When one needs to store materials on skids[pallets], the material handling storage aid system used is called pallet racking. There are many varieties of this storage aid system; all designed to allow for the materials to be stored in multiple levels on horizontal rows. All types of this system increase storage density; the most dense being the most expensive and cost decreasing with decrease in storage density.
Some common types of this storage aid system include:
Drive in and Drive through-These are storage rack arrangements that allow a forklift to move between storage rack rows. The only difference between these two types is that a drive through system has openings at both ends whereas the drive in has an opening at only one end.
Pallet flow-These storage aid systems make use of depth to increase storage capacity. It includes a slightly sloping rail that has rollers; thus allowing pallets to move with ease along the slope. These systems usually go with either Last in first out[LIFO], or first in first out[FIFO] storage systems. When using the FIFO method, the system is loaded from the front and the unloading done at the back. When using the LIFO method, the system is loaded at the front and the unloading is also done at the front.
