I hope you all had a great Easter. We are recovering from a fun weekend. In addition, I am still finishing up on some things and thought now would be a good time to look back at a DIY I showed you last fall – building your own wood pallet shelves.
Since I didn’t have access to pallets at the time, I used raw dunnage, which is the material used to build pallets.
You can go here to see my original post and a bit more of a detailed tutorial on how to build these, but here is the edited version:
1) Cut three slats into 48” lengths and then give them a light sanding – just enough to take the splinters out, but keep the rough appeal to them.
2) After applying sealer, RUB on your stain. I used an antique walnut finish. Rubbing the stain on will get the color into the grain and give it more of a natural, aged look. You don’t want it to look like you were trying to master a perfect finish.
3) With the bottom-side up, set spacers between the boards to maintain the slats as you attach the brackets.
4) Cut your ties to match the length of the bracket you are using. I used 8” brackets.
5) Attach the brackets to the ties first, then screw the ties into the shelves – being sure to keep your spacers in place.
6) Spray on a couple of coats of poly. If you don’t want any shine, use a matte finish.
Here they are in Joey’s room. His dusting skills need a little fine tuning – but I’m not complaining.
Tune in tomorrow to find out who the Ramsign giveaway winner is!
