Spill Pallet – An Overview | Free Online Articles

Spill pallet can be defined as a special type of bonded containment secondary item which is designed in such a way that it can easily hold the oil & fuel containers. They are mostly in the shape of a huge drum having capacity of holding 205 liters of liquid. They are often referred to as Intermediate Bulk Containers. They are termed as secondary containment storage facilities because of the fact that they are used mostly to provide a resistance to the spill & leaks of the inner containers. They are designed in such a way that the inner containers rest upon these pallets. These pallets can have different shapes and sizes according the amount of containers that will be placed within it.

Within UK, these pallets are a must to store oil or fuel containers. In fact, it is not legal at all to store the containers outside without proper banding through the help of secondary storage containers. The law has been passed in accordance to the Oil Storage Regulations Act, 2001. Oil bund is essential to prevent leaking or spilling of the oil from the actual container. This helps in preventing the environment from getting polluted. However, it is necessary for the secondary container to have the ability to hold a minimum of 110% of the weight of the inner container that will be placed.

These pallets are made from different types of materials. However, the most common material used to manufacture these containers is polyethylene (UV RAY stabilized). More expensive and tougher platters are manufactured using galvanized steel, which helps in greater protection from harmful chemicals.
