Amnesty program and employee tips improve pallet inventory

The Postal Service’s inventory of plastic pallets — its most valuable Mail Transportation Equipment MTE — has increased 470 percent since November 2011.USPS total pallet inventory including pressed wood and wood slat also is 147 percent higher than the same period last year SPLY.This surge is related to the Postal Service’s recent amnesty program, tips to the MTE hotline and other efforts. The Postal Service’s amnesty period to promote the prompt return of postal-owned equipment was Nov. 12-26The cost of replacing MTE inventories amounts to nearly $50 million each year. The greatest expense is for pallets. With wooden and plastic pallets ranging from $7 – $20 each, cardboard and plastic letter trays ranging from 65 cents to $2.75 per tray, and plastic flat tubs costing around $5 each, losses quickly add up.The Postal Service continues to search inside its network and beyond for MTE. Plant employees can do their part by collecting all MTE in each facility, stacking and organizing it to prepare for use or to provide to customers. Spot checks often can help uncover stockpiles of unused equipment. Any excess MTE must be returned to the Mail Transport Equipment Service Center.USPS encourages employees to report MTE that’s being misused, staged unnecessarily or located outside the postal network. If any Post Office is having difficulty getting pallets and other MTE returned to a plant for any reason, the MTE hotline can help.
