Rehrig to Upcycle Pallet Scrap into Fiberboard

What to do with your scrap wood? While many wood recyclers grind wood to sell it for use in a number of applications such as mulch, fuel or chips, one wood pallet recycling operator intends to upcycle its own wood waste into fiberboard. Rehrig Pacific Logistics will direct wood pallet scrap from its seven pallet recycling plants in Pennsylvania to the new operation in Northampton County, as I report at PackagingRevolution.net. The new facility will create 39 new jobs.

The company will enter into a five-year lease and renovate a 38,400-square-foot facility located in Glendon Borough, Northampton County. Rehrig Pacific Logistics received a $767,550 funding offer from the Department of Community and Economic Development, including a $750,000 loan from the Machine and Equipment Loan Fund and $17,550 in job training assistance.

"We're excited to bring our innovative recycled fiberboard factory to Pennsylvania," said Rehrig Pacific Logistics' director of innovation and operations, Todd Rodewald. "There are currently no companies in the U.S. converting wood waste in this manner. The facility will be producing a 100-percent recycled wood product for use in the furniture and construction industries. It's a win-win for Rehrig, Pennsylvania and the environment."

The project was coordinated by the Governor's Action Team or GAT, a group of economic development professionals who work directly with businesses that are considering locating or expanding in Pennsylvania. The Governor's Action Team worked with the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation (LVEDC) to assist Rehrig Pacific Logistics' efforts to expand.

Back in January, I reported on Litco, which makes presswood pallets from scrap wood.
