warehouse fire

(Journal photo) – Pallets surround a warehouse building at the Carolina Pallet Company location in Pelzer. Firefighters worked through the night and into the day Wednesday to contain a hot fiery blaze fueled by dry wooden pallets. The fire spread into a smaller warehouse located behind this building that was storing pallets. Smoke was still rising from the area late Wednesday afternoon. The building in the foreground burned about a year ago.

Weather conditions are also contributing to an increased fire danger throughout the upstate until 8 p.m. this evening officials said. Relative humidity will fall to the 20 to 25 percent range Wednesday afternoon across the foothills and Piedmont. Northwest winds will also gust to around 20 mph at times. The combination of low
relative humidity and gusty winds will enhance the fire danger.

Officials urge upstate residents to check with a local burn permitting authority on whether burning is allowed offer a reminder that if you do burn, use extreme caution because fires can quickly get out of control under these conditions.
